The story of Jean Guy begins in 2005, when a tray of seedlings was carefully transported across Montreal to a medical cannabis dispensary. This act was like a basket of babies being brought to a church doorstep, in that it was a act of care and compassion.

“These clones were given to us by one of our members. He had to get rid of them,” recalls Marc-Boris Saint-Maurice, director of the Montreal Compassion Center. “He used to grow them outdoors and told us it was the White Widow.”

Saint Maurice took the seedlings and carefully cultivated the now infamous fickle plants to maturity. After cloning a few more, he was so impressed with the mysterious variety that he decided to sell the fragrant buds to club members, but White Widow was already on the menu. “And I remember saying, ‘Well, what are we going to call it?’

The most Québecois name you can imagine

St-Maurice came up with the name “Jean Guy” for a strain of cannabis while joking around with friends. Everyone in the room liked the name, so it stuck. The strain quickly became iconic.

Since the Montreal Compassion Center’s supply of this product sold out quickly, many people began buying clones of it in the late 2000s.

It didn’t take long for St-Maurice to meet some Jean Guy from a small town in Quebec. His friend and former associate, Adam Greenblatt, had already shipped clones of the strain to Canada’s weed headquarters in British Columbia. “The name just followed because it’s associated with a great strain and it’s a very unique name,” he says.

Jean Guy goes big

Ryan Proctor, associate brand manager for Good Supply, says that the Jean Guy cultivar is now one of the most recognizable on the market. He notes that its popularity is evidenced by the fact that it has carried over from the legacy market into the legal market.

In the years leading up to cannabis legalization in Canada, Jean Guy won a number of prestigious awards, which may have helped to raise its profile. St-Maurice recalls seeing a print advertisement for Jean Guy in the New York Times in 2014 and being amazed that it had gone international.

According to Proctor, the Jean Guy strain is very high in THC, up to 25%, and very low in CBD, around 1%. He says it’s popular among THC hunters because of its strong lemon-pine taste and aroma. Good Supply’s product contains the top three terpenes that give it its sour-spicy-citrus punch: caryophyllene (pepper), guaiol (a more rare pine terpene), and limonene (citrus-lemon).

Although Proctor is a hybrid, he confirms that Jean Guy is a sativa-dominant strain that is more energizing and suited to daytime use. He describes it as ideal for creativity and inspiration, and notes that it gets you off the couch.

A clear, cerebral high

The experience of smoking Jean Guy is a clear, cerebral high that keeps you moving, according to St-Maurice. But he also enjoys the taste and smell of the weed, which he says is reminiscent of the smell of a clean school gymnasium.

St-Maurice has been growing, selling and enjoying the Jean Guy cannabis strain for 16 years, and it remains one of the most popular strains at the Montreal Compassion Center, accounting for 20-25% of sales. St-Maurice warns consumers that there are many imitations on the market, but the real Jean Guy can be distinguished by its lemon-pine scent and unique flavor.
